History
Founded in 1952 as the U.S. Civil Defence Council, it became the National Coordinating Council on Emergency Management in 1985, and changed its name to the International Association of Emergency Managers in 1998. It is a not for profit registered association that brings together emergency managers and disaster response professionals from all levels of government, the public and private sector, as well as volunteer organisations around the world. Since 1998 it has grown to a membership of over 4000 members from over 47 countries on 6 continents.
IAEM has partnered with the World Conference on Disaster Management (WCDM) in Toronto and the International Disaster and Emergency Readiness Conference (IDER) in Rome. It did so again in 2007 with IAEM Europa holding it’s inaugural AGM in conjunction with IDER in London in October 2007. Additionally IAEM has participated in events in Egypt, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Iran to deliver training and conference presentations to local EM’s. The level of involvement internationally has been a indication of the need for the linking up of EM’s around the globe. For more information please visit www.iaem.com
What Is a Certified Emergency Manager®?
IAEM created the Certified Emergency Manager® Program to raise and maintain professional standards. It is an internationally recognized program that certifies achievements within the emergency management profession.
Here are just a few of the reasons why many employers now list the CEM® as a job requirement when posting open positions for emergency managers:
- A Certified Emergency Manager® (CEM®) has the knowledge, skills and ability to effectively manage a comprehensive emergency management program.
- A CEM® has a working knowledge of all the basic tenets of emergency management, including mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
- A CEM® has experience and knowledge of interagency and community-wide participation in planning, coordination and management functions designed to improve emergency management capabilities.
- A CEM® can effectively accomplish the goals and objectives of any emergency management program in all environments with little or no additional training orientation.
